Testimonials: Before and After Smiles...Lives transformed in as little as 45 minutes. Children who are born with cleft lip or cleft palate are faced with challenges many of us cannot ever imagine. Many have difficulty eating, speaking or even smiling and in some parts of the world, they are hidden away, kept from socializing, attending school or playing an active role in their community. Operation Smile reverses this in less than an hour. Our volunteers work tirelessly to help these children have a bright and hopeful future. Throughout the Morocco, hundreds of children have experienced this transformation, and a few of their stories are told here.
Yassin Zaim Yassin Zaim is a six-year-old boy who suffered from a cleft lip. His parents, who are technicians, were desperate to get help for their only child. In March 2006, he travelled 40km by car with his mother Fatima Aguador to Fes, Morocco, because his family had heard at their town hall that Operation Smile was offering free cleft lip and cleft palate surgery during a medical mission. He led a very lonely life and was often made fun of by other children who called him a rabbit or a camel. Yassin told the Operation Smile team after his surgery, that when he grows up, he wants to become a doctor so that he can do surgeries for free. He and his family also wanted to thank all of the members of the team and let them know that their hard work will never be forgotten. It was a wonderful experience that changed the lives of the whole family.
